I want to be a mentor because I have seen and experienced first hand the mental challenges that come with being a competitive athlete and then becoming a student-athlete at the collegiate level. Having the opportunity to be a resource for younger athletes to help provide support for these challenges at an early stage is something I'm very passionate about, and being connected to someone like a Better Together mentor when I was in middle and high school would have been extremely beneficial.

I want to be a mentor because I know how impactful it was to have my older brother who also played college lacrosse guide me through my athletic career. I know most kids are not as fortunate as I was on that front, and I would love to serve as that figure for someone else. Additionally, improving my outlook had a potent effect on my on-field play and academics, so I know the value of mental fortitude for student athletes.

I want to be a mentor because because sports have been such an important part of my own growth, both on and off the field. Lacrosse taught me discipline, teamwork, and resilience, and I want to help younger players develop those same qualities. I also know how valuable it is to have someone who’s been through the same experiences of balancing school and sports, to offer advice and encouragement. By mentoring, I want to share what I’ve learned, help them build confidence, and show them that success isn’t just about wins, but about learning, staying positive, and having fun doing what you love.

Throughout my athletic career, lacrosse has provided me with lessons and people to help me navigate life. As an athlete who has struggled with mental health and addiction, I have been blessed with support and love from teammates and coaches, allowing me to develop skills and a resilient work ethic that has enabled me to overcome all kinds of mental challenges. My favorite part of sports is the camaraderie and community that it provides me. I feel passionate about eliminating mental health stigma and giving guidance on life as a sober collegiate athlete. Better Together has provided me with a framework to help others and share my experiences and tools to attack mental health as one collective.

I want to serve as a mentor because sports teach me resilience, balance, and the power of a supportive community—lessons that extend far beyond the field. As I navigate the pressures of athletic performance, team dynamics, and academic life, I recognize the value of someone who listens, shares honest insight, and helps younger athletes build their mental strength. Through Athletes Better Together, I am excited to guide aspiring athletes toward clarity, confidence, and joy in their sport. It is rewarding to offer encouragement, share experiences, and help them thrive not only in competition, but also in life.

Being a student-athlete has been one of the most positive and rewarding experiences in my life. However, it was not always an easy experience, defined by many challenges and moments of isolation. By navigating these difficulties and using courage to reach out to others, I have accomplished things I would not have been able to do alone. In the process, many of my mentors and peers have also become my greatest lifelong friends. This mentorship position is an opportunity to continue spreading the kindness and compassion that others used to carry me through my most difficult times.

I want to be a mentor because I know what it feels like to go through the ups and downs of high school and college sports. Balancing school, practices, and life overall isn’t easy, and sometimes just having someone who’s been there to lean on or talk to can make a huge difference. Sports taught me a lot about resilience, teamwork, and finding balance, and I’d love to share what I’ve learned so others can feel supported and confident as they go through their own journey.

I want to be a mentor because I have lived the highs and lows of being a collegiate athlete. I have won a national Championship, I have lost a national championship, I have earned national recognition, and I have faced the reality of a season ending injury. I know the mental capacity and vision it takes to push through adversity and reach success. I want to help other athletes navigate that path by being someone who can relate to them and learn from them also. Just by speaking to other athletes it not only helps the mentee but also the mentor.

Experiencing being a student athlete first hand, I know how difficult and overwhelming it can be. I want to be a resource for student athletes looking to excel and properly manage their life and their sport. I am a big advocate for mental health among athletes and believe it is important to seek out help when you need it. I would love to give the support and encouragement to athletes who may be struggling or looking for someone to lean on in their journey with their sport. I believe sports are something that should be fun and an outlet for athletes to enjoy. I know how to advocate for athletes and more importantly the studies that they complete. I am very passionate about pursuing simultaneously academics and athletics. I am super excited about the opportunity to be a mentor because I am passionate about supporting people, mentally and emotionally. As a psychology major in college, I have developed a deep understanding of the way people think. I held a leadership role in Special Olympics where I learned the true value of genuine connection especially through the power of sports. I know how impactful is it to have someone in your corner and I am pumped to be that support system to people.

The mentoring community under Athletes Better Together is a high value of mine as it places the importance of relationships and support systems at the forefront of athlete mental health. As an athlete, many factors seem to exist out of our control, but I emphasize the value of focusing on the controllables: one of them being the relationships forged with peers and teammates. Through this program, I hope to not only be an outlet for young athletes, but also a tool to help guide them to their highest level of success.

My junior year of playing collegiate soccer while balancing being a student-athlete, recovering from an ACL injury, being a captain of my team, and supporting my teammates, an incredible sports performance coach said to me, “Maddie, you are like a duck. On the surface it seems as though you are effortlessly gliding on top of the water, staying afloat, while underneath, you are paddling furiously to keep your head above water.” To this day, this metaphor has stuck with me, reminding me of the intricate relationship between mental health and performance and that often we do not see how ferociously people are paddling underneath the surface. Better Together is an incredible platform to allow athletes to build a network of support and challenge us all to care for our emotional and mental wellbeing just as much as our physical health and wellbeing, recognizing and honoring all that’s going on beneath the surface.
